Toyo Introduces the "T-184C" Large-size Vertical Grinding Machine
Large-scale grinding machine capable of grinding workpieces with an internal or external diameter of over 1 meter

Toyo Advanced Technologies Co., Ltd., (Head Office: Hiroshima, Japan; President: Yasuto Tatsuta) has released the newly developed T-184C, the first in a series of large-size vertical grinding machines that are to be capable of grinding workpieces larger than one meter in diameter.

Over the last two years, Toyo has steadily introduced a series of vertical grinding machines ranging in size from compact to large, with the T-181C (chuck type) compact model, the T-182S (centerless type) midsize model and the T-183C (chuck type) large-size model already on the market. The T-184C grinding machine surpasses the T-183C, which was the largest model in the series, and is capable of grinding workpieces with inner or outer diameters of up to 1,250 mm.

The T-184C is a large machine, measuring 5,300 mm (W) x 4,600 mm (D) 4,350 mm (H). This new model features increased rigidity throughout the entire machine, as well as high-precision hydrostatic bearings in the work spindle and Toyo's first electropermanent magnetic chuck. This allows the T-184C to provide stable, high-precision grinding of workpieces with external diameters of up to 1,250mm, widths of up to 400 mm, and weights as high as 2,000 kilograms.

Toyo has also developed a new high-frequency wheelhead for the grinding wheel that offers both high output and excellent rigidity. The high-frequency wheelhead is a 30 kW high-output type that incorporates a built-in AE (Acoustic Emission) sensor (Toyo's first in a mass-production model) as well as a new Auto Balancer, another first for Toyo. Features such as automatic correction of rotation imbalance inside the wheelhead when a large-diameter grinding wheel is used ensure that the T-184C provides high levels of precision as well as excellent efficiency.

To meet the growing diversity of the market, Toyo introduced the T-182S, Japan's first centerless vertical internal grinding machine, in July 2005. Since then, Toyo has continued to make significant inroads into Japan's market for vertical internal grinding machines. The new T-184C is Toyo's first ultra-large grinding machine capable of handling workpieces more than one meter in diameter, making it ideal for high-precision grinding of large-scale bearings and gears, etc.

Toyo is continuing to expand the size of its ultra-large vertical grinding machines and plans to introduce the T-185C, capable of grinding workpieces up to 1.6 meters, followed by the T-186C, which will be able to handle workpieces up to 2.6 meters in diameter.

Main Features of the T-184C

◆Basic Specifications

Floor space: (W x D x H) 5,300 mm x 4,600 mm x 4,350 mm

Max. chuckable workpiece outer diameter: 1,250 mm

Grindable workpiece inner/outer diameter: 400 mm to 1,250 mm

◆High-Precision High-Efficiency Grinding

The T-184C features optimized basic structures in elements such as the base and column, coupled with even higher rigidity throughout the machine. It also provides high levels of precision and efficiency in grinding through the use of components such as hydrostatic bearings, a newly developed wheelhead and an electropermanent magnetic chuck.

  1. Work Spindle

To ensure that heavy workpieces rotate stably, hydrostatic bearings with excellent rotation precision are used in the work spindle. A high rotation precision of 0.8 µm or less ensures stable, high-precision grinding.

  2. Electropermanent Magnetic Chuck

This is the first time that Toyo has used an electropermanent magnetic chuck, a type of magnetic chuck that only requires power when the workpiece is loaded and unloaded. With a conventional magnetic chuck, power must be supplied continuously while the workpiece is held in place. With large-scale machines, this leads to increased power consumption and generates heat. With an electropermanent magnetic chuck, power need only be supplied when the workpiece is loaded and unloaded, thereby reducing power consumption and allowing greater grinding precision.

  3. High-Frequency Wheelhead

The grinding wheel is equipped with a new wheelhead developed specifically for ultra-large vertical grinding machines (optional). It is based on the HFB series high-frequency wheelhead, which has an established reputation for high output and excellent rigidity, and features performance improvements that allow highly precise and efficient grinding of large workpieces. The new wheelhead is available in two versions: the 6,000 rpm HFB0060-300 and the 2,800 rpm HFB0028-300, both of which are 30 kW high-output models and incorporate the new Auto Balancer and built-in AE sensor.
    AE Sensor
This is the first time Toyo has incorporated an AE sensor into a mass-production model. The sensor very accurately detects contact between the grinding wheel and the workpiece during dressing or grinding, ensuring that the grinding is extremely precise, efficient and stable.
    Auto Balancer
As workpieces increase in size, grinding wheels also become larger, and Toyo has introduced its first Auto Balancer to correct the rotation imbalances that arise during the use of large-diameter grinding wheels. The Auto Balancer built into the wheelhead operates whenever it detects a rotation imbalance, quickly correcting the imbalance.

  4. TOYOMATIC-4000

The T-184C is equipped with the TOYOMATIC-4000, a high-performance, conversational CNC system developed by Toyo. It supports a range of operations, including automated grinding and continuous multi-face grinding.
